New York Comic Con, the Big Apple, and everything in between

I have the privilege of traveling across the U.S. quite a lot for my day job. Earlier this month we dropped into New York Comic Con.

With my job, I have a little bit of "wiggle room" for wandering around the cities we travel to before conventions start. New York Comic Con is a four day show (Thursday through Sunday), but we landed on Tuesday! This gave the boyfriend and I plenty of time to wander around the city.

Last year when we were in NYC, I neglected the opportunity to visit Mood. You know...Mood. The fabric store featured on PROJECT RUNWAY. This would undoubtedly parallel a religious experience for me. So, after landing on Tuesday afternoon, we checked into our hotel and proceeded to the Garment District. I wasted no time in heading to Mood. I did my best to contain my squeaking and rejoicing - actually trying to hone in on some quality fabric and crafting tools for my stash. I ended up buying some tools for construction, a sketching journal, and one of those trademark tote bags. Why not? Right? I even resisted saying "Thank you, Mood!" as I exited.

Dorky me perusing the Mood aisles.

The elevator doors as you say goodbye.

After Mood, we stopped into the Houndstooth Pub for some food. Though this restaurant was in an area with high foot traffic (dare I say "touristy"), it had the atmosphere of a neighborhood pub I'd stop into in Chicago. Wednesday was set-up day. I'll skip the details of this process. It mostly consists of trucking heavy material into the convention hall, networking with other dealers, walking around the convention center aimlessly, waiting in a 20 minute line at the only Starbucks around...the process of most large con set-ups.

New York Comic Con (hereby referred to as NYCC) is a meeting of cosplay, merchandise, fandom, and geek chic representation. Hence why some of my favorite cosmetics companies Kiss and NYX were there!

You can even see the NYX Wicked lippies here - a week before they were released!

The weekend was a blur of attendee faces, sneaking away from the booth for a few precious minutes to score some of my own con swag, and meeting the guys from Welcome to Nightvale!

So sad I covered Dylan Marron in my picture! As a consolation, he told me everything I was wearing was adorable, and he rolled up my poster after signing it because as a dealer I must "do this for people all day".

It was a tiring weekend, but (as always) worth the experience! I can't wait to see what ends up on next year's NYC "to do" list after a year of dreaming of the Big Apple.
